Derek Clancey - An ECHL Journeyman to Canucks Pro Scouting Director

From ECHL to NHL

Derek Clancey, a native of St. John's, Newfoundland, has enjoyed an extraordinary hockey journey that has taken him from the ECHL to a prominent role in the NHL. After spending the majority of his playing career in the ECHL, amassing over 400 games, Clancey transitioned to a scouting role. Currently, he serves as the Director of Pro Scouting for the Vancouver Canucks.

A Player's Perspective

Clancey's time in the ECHL provided him with invaluable insights into the challenges and opportunities that minor league players face. He witnessed firsthand the sacrifices and determination required to succeed at that level and gained a deep understanding of player development paths.

Scouting Expertise

Upon retiring from playing, Clancey's passion for hockey led him to pursue a career in scouting. His extensive network and keen eye for talent quickly earned him recognition within the industry. In 2021, he joined the Vancouver Canucks, becoming the first hire made by newly appointed President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford.

Maple Leafs Assistant General Manager

Prior to joining the Canucks, Clancey served as an assistant general manager for player personnel with the Toronto Maple Leafs. In this role, he played a crucial part in player evaluation, contract negotiations, and roster management.
