Spain defeated Germany 5-3 on penalty kicks to reach the semifinals of UEFA EURO 2024 on Tuesday after the match ended in a 1-1 draw at Wembley Stadium. Alvaro Morata scored the winning penalty after Olmo and Werner traded goals in regulation.
Spain had the better of the chances in the first half, but it was Germany who took the lead in the 55th minute when Werner pounced on a loose ball in the box and fired home. Spain equalized in the 79th minute when Olmo curled a beautiful shot into the top corner.
The match went to extra time and then to a penalty shootout, where Spain ultimately prevailed. Unai Simon saved the first two German penalties, and Morata converted the winning penalty to send Spain through to the semifinals.
